The Samaria Gorge is the largest and one of the most imposing gorges in Europe. It has been
designated as a Protected Natural Monument by the European Council and is one of the most
important National Forests of Crete and Greece. The gorge is 18 kilometers long and varies in
width from 150 meters to 3-4 meters at its narrowest point, known as the Iron Gates. The hike
in the gorge starts from Xyloskalos, Omalos (at an altitude of 1,200 meters) and requires
between 4-8 hours, depending on the level of physical condition, the pace of walking. On
average, six hours is enough for those who wish to enjoy the route without rushing too much.
Walking in the Samaria Gorge, one discovers a varied landscape, with water springs, pools and
impressive large rocks stretching out into the stream, as well as many trees, such as plane
trees, pines and cypresses. Oak trees rooted in the rocks, scents of herbs and the Cretan wild
goat (kri-kri) climbing a steep slope (for those lucky enough to see it) make the trip to this
gorge unforgettable. At the end of the hike you can take the boat that goes to Loutro, Chora
Sfakion, Sougia or Paleochora.
